We experience that providing learning and development opportunities for trainees and apprentices have lots of benefits. Young and talented people contribute to our successes with their enthusiasm and willingness to learn and after their graduation we can offer a full time position for the best students. In the past years, we hired students who completed their traineeship in our hotel.
In 2018, we renewed our IHG Academy trainee program. During the 6-month traineeship, trainees can choose one project that they work on in teams. One of the projects was to organise programs for the staff in order to increase the awareness about environmental protection. Our trainee group chose 5th June as this is the World Environment Day and organised such programs whereby everybody could participate and contribute. They created a Green Quiz among departments with quiz questions about Green Engage, IHG Responsible Business target and environmental actions. They placed "Did You Know Cards" in the staff area with various tips how to save water and energy and create less waste. They turned the staff canteen to a fully self-service buffet and asked colleagues to take only as much food as they would eat. On this day we managed to decrease the food waste by 67% in the staff canteen. The activities were very popular among our colleagues due to the creative solutions of our trainees.
Develop and teach young people and involve them in projects besides the daily tasks and responsibilities. By this, you can create valuable experiences for them, while your hotel will benefit from their ideas and contribution.
